Food In Mexico City
Let’s Talk Food
Below is a collection of the noteworthy food we ate while in Mexico City. We only dabbled in the street food scene and the options available are vast. But I love myself some tacos and they are in abundance here and they never disappoint. They are so good that they can almost be an obstacle to the enjoying the international food scene in CDMX.
You can find every type of cuisine you want here — including lots of fusions like Asian Mexican. A lot of it is quite affordable but there’s no shortage of higher end foodie restaurants as well.
There are also some other amazing traditional foods that we loved – like Mole, which varies regionally & by restaurant (some mole sauces are smokey, some with rich cocoa undertones, some a bit spicy) so you’ll have to keep on enjoying it everywhere. Pulque is a traditional Mexican fermented alcohol drink made from agave & we enjoyed a glass at a local Pulquería in centro. Michelle’s favorite new to her dish was Chilaquiles — another traditional Mexican breakfast dish that photographs terribly, but is insanely delicious – think breakfast nachos only better. I didn’t realize how much I was going to love those freshly blended tomatillos in the chilaquiles and salsa verde.
A few spots worth a visit:
Pulquería Las Duelistas
Centro Neighborhood – This place is a vibe. Try the celery pulque!

La Gruta – The Cave Restaurant
Located just outside of the Teotihuacán Pyramids complex – this restaurant is located inside an open air cave (nice & cool!) and they have a variety of pre-hispanic cuisine on offer. The mole here was my favorite of the many I tried (~M). Worth a trip after a day exploring the pyramids. Pricing is affordable for a western budget especially for such a unique experience ($90 USD for 2 people).
