Vermut Cocktails In Spain
A thick clear glass, generously filled with chunky ice cubes, a cool red liquid, a slice of orange & a toothpick speared with green olives.
Upon entering this tiny little bar on the main drag in alicante Spain; the bartender approaches ready with recommendations. This is the first vermouth bar I’ve ever stepped foot in Ben & I are interested in what’s on offer. Sweet, medium or dry? That’s the starting point for anyone who’s not familiar with this drink.
I opt for medium. Ben edges the line of “dry dry” the far end of the spectrum.
Mildly spiced, crisp & picking up small hints from the citrus & olive; sweet enough to create a smooth mouth feel. I’ve never had a vermouth cocktail, but Spain is known for this drink.
Pipirrana vermut (the bar in question) is an ideal place for a first try. The bartender is friendly, clearly catering to newcomers & offering small snacks that pair well with our cocktails.

La Guapa Vermuteria Mercado – A tiny little stall located inside Alicante’s Central Mercado. We did not stop here, but passing by, it looked to be pretty popular.
